A Study of the Root Canal Morphology of Human Mandibular Incisors with Transparent Specimens

Abstract
Fifty mandibular incisors (including twenty five central and twenty five lateral incisors) were injected with china ink, decalcified, cleared and used in an in vitro study to determine the numbers of the root canals, the frequency and location of lateral canals, the location of the apical foramens, and the curvatures of the root canals.
The results were as follows:
1. Most of the teeth demonstrated single canal, but 4 of 50 teeth were found to have bifurcated canals.
2. In bifurcated canals, the locations of bifurcation were middle and apical third of the roots and separate apical foramens were found in 3cases.
3. Of the 54 canals studied, 8 canals were found to have lateral canals and these ramifications were usually located in the apical third of the roots.
4. The frequencies of mesial and distal curvatures of the root canals were almost the same, but the labial curvatures of the root canals were more prevalent than the lingual directions.
5. Most of the apical foramens were located directlyon the root apices.
